DIDIER DAGUENEAU BLANC FUME
"The wild man of Pouilly", Didier Dagueneau took the world by storm. His aim was to make "the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world". Here, you can be the judge of that...
Born to a Burgundian wine making family, Didier wanted to do different things, he became an international motorcycle sidecar racer. He eventually returned to winemaking but rather than becoming the 4th generation on his families' vineyard, he bought his first parcel in Pouilly Fume and started a revolution.
Bucking many of the rules and practices of the region, he started experimenting. Adopting Organic or Biodynamic practices depending on what suited the vineyard, using horses to plow the vines, harvesting yields 50-75% less than his neighbours, using natural fermentation and ageing on oak with lees contact were all methods he used in his search for the best Sauvignon Blanc
Expanding into Sancerre and later, further into Jurancon who knows where he could have taken wine making. He tragically died in a microlite accident in 2008. His son Louis Benjamin has been continuing his painstaking work ever since and winning accolade after accolade for his efforts.
Though this may not be one of the Didier estates Flagship wines, the level of effort and attentiveness is still obvious, it just comes with a slightly lower price tag.
